Kelsey’s Story, Part 3

Part 3

Kelsey’s Story appeared in five weekly installments: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5.

“Of the people who suffer my type of injury, only 3% live.”

Laying in that hospital bed, these questions raced through my mind. The type of fracture I had is what’s known in the medical field as a Jefferson fracture. My vertebra was broken in three places. Of the people who suffer this fracture, only 3% live. It is a miracle that I am walking and speaking…that I am even alive.

That night, my nurse Wendy, who was so caring towards me, came back into the room & she asked me if an advocate from Empowerhouse, our local Domestic Violence Organization, could come to meet me. I had no one. I had no more to lose at this point, so I said okay. Utterly alone, I didn’t know what was to come. I didn’t know what to expect. I thought -I’m sure they care but what can they possibly do for me? My life is in shambles. A short while later Tammy came in & introduced herself to me, laying there in the hospital room in my neck brace, exhausted.

Tammy had a gentleness with me that night that I will never forget. I had been completely cut off from my own mother, she was very motherly to me that night.

I am so happy that I accepted Empowerhouse’s help because they were the stepping stones that changed my life.
